We’ve left early to go play before, but this was ridiculous. Sunday morning we left Glencoe around 2:00 am to travel up to Barbourville, KY. We were scheduled to play a Sunday morning service at Union College for the incoming freshman. Fortunately, God watched over us as we traveled so we had a very smooth riding trip (except on I-59 or if you’re in the back seat of the van) with the occasional stop for coffee and bathroom breaks.
We played in an old chapel building that had been renovated back in the mid 1900’s. It was a pretty cool venue but the acoustics were horrible, so we had to fight that battle. I think overall the sound was pretty good considering.
Playing in front of college students is an experience in itself. College students are different. The world is simple, mainly because they haven’t experienced most of it yet, so it takes a lot to impress them or, in our situation, move them to worship. I was the same way during my years at Jax State. Students of higher education express themselves completely different than any other age group. A blank stare during a worship service doesn’t necessarily mean they are not worshipping, it just simply means they are not in high school anymore and are not quick to get excited about something. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing, it’s just, what we call a tough crowd. I believe they enjoyed the service, even if they didn’t let on.
We shortened our set a little due to time. Here’s the set list.

This was a good flowing set. I think we played well. We almost had a problem at one point. In between Everlasting and Hosanna, Robby has to do a guitar change. Normally he, with Josh on keys, sings a chorus of Hosanna to help transition into the song. But due to time restraints, Joel called an audible and started the song early. After he starts we have literally seconds before everyone comes in. Robby cut it closer than Michael Phelps’ win in the 100 breast stroke, but he made it, and the song went on without a hitch.
I don’t know how many miles we traveled but I do know we went from Gadsden, AL to Barbourville, KY, played a show, ate some lunch, stopped at Guitar Center ,then came home, all in about 16 hours. That’s one way to spend a Sunday.
Right before we left we were trying to decide who was going to drive. Josh said he would be fine to drive, that he wasn’t that sleepy. Really?

Til then,
Adam
